Funeral of the Metropolitan Bartolomeu Anania

Last week the Metropolitan Bartolomeu Anania died at the age of 89. Loved by many people he was an important figure of Orthodoxy, being in the same time an important man of culture and patriot. His funeral was a national event bringing together more than 7000 people and important religious, culture and political personalities. These two pictures are taken from in the Othodox cathedral in Cluj-Napoca, during the evening prayer when hundreds of people came and assisted at the religious ceremony.

I went in the morning to the center of Cluj-Napoca, to celebrate the National Day with my countrymen. But nothing really special, a short religious ceremony in the Orthodox Cathedral, wreaths, local political figures, soldiers, fanfare, silent people, quite children, but interested in the soldiers weapons and rain. Happy birthday Romania.

Cazanul de tuica

I took these pictures at a brandy distillery (cazan de tuica) in a small Transylanian village (Sacalu de padure), in Mures district, few km from my grandma's place. Even though the European Union standards are not totally respected, tuica is clean and strong, sometimes even more than 60 degrees.

Saturday night around the moon was a strange circle. Without a tripod and with a 2 second shutter speed the picture came out not very clean, but the phenomenon is interesting.

A Saturday in Central Park (Cluj-Napoca)

Saturday I was a bit melancholic. I was listening "Nothing else matters", reflecting and watching how the sun goes down. It was that kind of autumn day when you don't want to be in the house. It was quite warm for a November day, so I made two sandwiches, I took my camera and I left the house, going to Central Park, to admire the "nature" and see what people were doing. Bellow are some pictures, quite many actually, but even though there are not master pieces, I really like them, because you can see the diversity of people, each of them with his/her stories and thoughts.
I love deversity and is great how a park can be the place where everyone can find a path.

This week, Tuesday, a friend of mine invited me to Carturesti for a session of African stories. The storyteller was Guy from Ivory Coast, who came to Cluj-Napoca few months ago and he made a nice atmosphere, especially with his "drum" (I don't know the name) which attracted many hands. Search for him, because he is an interesting story and is learning Romanian quite fast.

When I arrived in Cluj I participated to a baptism. After the religious ceremony everybody went to a restaurant for a small party where three gypsies played a really cool music. They are from Mociu, Cluj district, and they are quite famous in this region. The man who plays double bass really impressed me with his passion for his music and even though he was really short in comparison with his instrument, he was the master.

Naomi is a special girl for me. A great voice and a good soul, she inspired me and made my interest for Africa grow. She was an intern for Atlantic Bridge before I came and is still involved in different activities. Bike trip in the evening

When the last youth from Europe Week left I was a little sad. At our center it was quite and that made me remember that I have less than one month from my EVS experience. I've got used with life in Holland, in Kruiningen and at Atlantic Bridge. Last evening I had the feeling that I haven't tasted enough from the region that I live in. So, I took my bike, my backpack and my camera and I started a longer trip. I biked almost 40 km in about three hours and I tried to feel and capture the Netherlands, in a way that I always want to remember. It was a great feeling and only darkness made me to come back home.

Europe Week, beach day

For ten days we organized at Atlantic Bridge a multilateral exchange with more than 40 youth from seven countries (Romania, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Wales, Germany, Belgium and Netherlands). We prepared many interesting activities for them, sports, arts, trainings and other workshops and trips, thus we spent some time at De Banjaard, a really nice beach at the North Sea. The weather wasn't very good so we played few games that made the youth quite involved.

Tour de France and Tour de Kruiningen

Sunday was a historical day for Kruiningen. Tour the France passed our village, about 50 m from our center. Many people from different parts of the country came here to see the caravan. With an average speed of 50 km/h the group of cyclists gave me just few seconds for taking pictures, but the feeling was really nice. Was a great experience to see the phenomenon "Tour de France".

One day before, we had the "Tour de Kruiningen". It is an annual cycling competintion for local amateurs, when the village center is blocked for a race, when children and adults are competing in different rounds. I was too late unfortunately, thus I couldn't catch more actions.

Discovery Zeeland, part 3- Wind mills

Netherlands are famous for their wind-mills and almost every willage or town in Zeeland has at least one wind-mill. During the same exchange we went to Stavenisse where the miller opened the mill for us. The wind was blowing and we could see how it works.

Discovery Zeeland, part 2- Religion

In Zeeland religion is an important cultural aspect and the church unites and divides in the sametime the commnunities. On Tholen island you can see and understand these aspects much better. Sundays some people are going to churches two or three times, and women must wear skirts and hats during the religious service. Some families don't have television and Sunday is just a day for Bible studies and family moments, thus the towns and villages seem to be empty.

Last week we had an youth exchange with an Hungarian group. Most activities took part on the island of Tholen (Zeeland province), where we had a nice opportunity to discover how the Dutch land was created. Together with the group I participated to a trip through salty soil, grass and water, crossing ditches and swamps. These are some shots from that nice afternoon in Sint Annaland.

Yerseke is a cozy fishermen village located 7 km from Kruiningen. Today I've decided to make a bike tour in Yerseke, to feel the strong sea smell. Having a harbour, the village is famous for mussel production all around the country. Being Ascension day, in the harbour was quite, but some of the people were on duty.

One evening I watched the movie Once. A very nice low budget Scottish movie. At the end of it I had a good feeling of freedom and I decided to have a bike tour. It was the midnight and I took my camera with me. I tried few things but because I don't have a tripod I couldn't be very flexible. After an EVS training in Arhnem we had few free days, so we decided to travel around the Netherlands. We spent two nights in Den Helder, a windy city, from where you can take a ferry to Texel Island. It was a great day to be a tourist on the island, not too much sun, but I saw the see. Few shots from that day.

Sambata am facut o mini excursie cu niste prieteni prin Bucovina. Ne-am oprit si la doua manastiri, Voronet si Humor, unde am incercat sa surprind putin, pe fuga, atmosfera locurilor.

In weekendul 17-19 am mers pentru prima data in Retezat. Nerabdator si dornic de aventura am pornit spre salbaticia Parcului National. Acesta nu este un simplu complex de creste si vai. L-am simtit ca un adevarat personaj, un gigant care impune respect si in jurul caruia se concentreaza energiile sutelor de oameni ce il strabat zilnic, pe poteci si trasee spectaculoase. In putinul timp petrecut in munti am "cucerit", doar in sandale (de munte), 3 varfuri, dintre care cel mai maret este Retezat (2485 m). De acum inainte Retezatul va fi ceva special pentru mine, si ma va striga mereu sa ii descopar misterele.

Multi dintre noi recunosc Turcia dupa excursiile din Antalya, Galatasaray si Besiktas, rahat si faptul ca vor sa adere la UE. Dar Turcia este mult mai spectaculoasa. Combinand aerul occidental, prin cosmopolitul Istanbul, cu exotismul si culorile Orientului islamic, este o cultura impresionanta pentru orice european. Dupa cum ati putut vedea in niste fotografii anterioare, am participat la un proiect de CSR pentru Bechtel, care s-a desfasurat in doua sate din judetul Cluj. Dupa ce am sustinut doua workshopuri cu elevii de la scoala generala din Tureni, impreuna cu eschipa, am premiat copiii, in cadrul Festivalului Scolii. Aceste evenimente au implicat toti elevii si profesorii, iar pe alocuri si cate un parinte ratacit. Mai jos aveti cateva imagini pentru a va face o ideea despre acest festival.

Banca de pe marginea santului ocupa un loc sacru in bunul mers al lucrurilor prin satele ardelene. Femeile de pe ulita sunt adevarati povestitori pentru cateva clipe, in zilele de duminica sau in sarbatori. Fiecare matusa participa la firul povestilor, pentru ca fiecare matusa este o poveste in sine.
